While I’m a big fan of varietal wines –wines made from a single grape variety -I am increasingly searching out blended wines, where two or more varieties work together to create a wine that seems greater than the sum of its component parts.
One such white wine blend is Semillon with Sauvignon Blanc – these wines offer up the best of both worlds to create a compelling tasting experience. A great example of this is the subject of this week’s “swirl” – the Shaw Wines Semillon Sauvignon Blanc 2021 – A very smart wine from a quality Yass Valley producer.
In the glass, this “SemSav” is pale straw in colour with a bright gold flash from within. A swirl reveals freshly cut pineapple, green mango and passionfruit with a sprinkle of freshly cut grass. After a while in the glass, green apple and citrus aromas chime in.
On the palate, it’s lively and crisp with apple and lime juice flavours and a zip of acidity that leads to a refreshing finish and a need for another mouthful.
We enjoyed our bottle with Thai Red Curry of Chicken, and it would go well with other Asian inspired dishes and fresh seafood straight from the grill.
I got mine as part of my cellar club dozen, but you can buy it for $30 online.
