Following the pandemic and multiple lockdowns, Member for Eden-Monaro Kristy McBain was eager to catch up with Yass Valley Aged Care CEO Lyn Morgan at Horton House last Friday.

Kristy had a tour of the aged care facility and was impressed with the recent refurbishment and the positive impact this has had on residents. With facilities across the country unable to have visitors and run certain activities, it has been difficult for both staff and residents.

Like many aged care residences across Eden- Monaro, Horton House is experiencing staff shortage issues, which puts additional pressure on other staff.

Kristy appreciated Lyn’s openness and honesty regarding the aged care sector and funding challenges.

She was impressed with the way that Horton House adjusted to the pandemic, by installing Wi-Fi throughout the facility and assisting residents to connect with family and friends online.

Kristy was also particularly impressed with Horton House’s Tovertafel which is a fantastic interactive projector that fosters social interaction and cognitive activity in people with dementia.

The games provide a fun and playful way for resi- dents to complete interactive tasks such as catching fish or decorating cakes. After having a bit of a play, Kristy said it was clear this was a highly beneficial piece of technology that will no doubt assist many residents now and into the future.
