Sixty-Second Swirl by Brent Lello, Yass Valley Times Wine Columnist

An increasing trend amongst Aussie wine drinkers is to fetch out for food-friendly styles of wine.  In my view, one of the best food-friendly drops getting around is Sangiovese.  The Sangiovese grape variety originally hails from the Tuscany region of Italy and is responsible for the global phenomenon that is Chianti.  A region that produces finer food and wine combinations than Tuscany would be hard to find.

Sangiovese has really found a second home in Australia, and we have many great versions right here in the Yass Valley region, as wily winemakers tune into the trends of the taste buds of the region’s wine drinkers.  In my view, one of the best in our region is the focus of this week’s “swirl” – the 2021 Eden Road Gundagai Sangiovese.

This “Sangio” is a deeply dark red in the glass with flashes of bright purple at the edges.  A swirl invites aromas of black cherry and blood plum, with a crack of cool climate white pepper and a hint of baked earth. The palate is supple, sensual and silky smooth, coating the tongue with sweet, juicy plum and dark berry fruit flavours.  The finish is mellow and lingers that little bit longer, leading to a satisfying, food-friendly finish.

We sourced our bottle from the excellent local selection at the Murrumbateman Country Inn, and thoroughly enjoyed the delicious drop with the Pub’s chargrilled lamb cutlets.  This wine would go well with woodfired pizza, red meat sauce-based pasta or a spicy BBQ’d sausage.  To get your own bottle, drop into the MCI, or see the Eden Road team at the cellar door.
