The Yass Magpies defeated the Harden Worhawks 58 – 0 over the weekend in an away game in Harden in Round 8 of the Blumers Lawyers 2022 Katrina Fanning Shield.

The undefeated Magpies celebrated their win with a well-deserved pub crawl on the way back home. Currently sitting at the top of the ladder, the Magpies Ladies are looking to secure a finals spot after a ripping first season under new coach Brendon Housten.

The Yass Magpies haven’t let the opposition score a point in four out of seven matches this season coming out 42 – 0 against Tuggeranong Bushrangers, 82 – 0 against Boomanulla Raiders, 86 – 0 against UC Stars, and now 58 – 0 against Harden.

“Defensively we’ve been outstanding, the for and against tells that story,” Brendon said. “The defence got better every week and that’s probably our staple really.”

The coach said all the players had improved over the season as he focuses on both footy skills and attitudes and mindset.

“As a group, they’re all stepping up,” he said. “The results are there but it’s hard to pinpoint any one in particular because it’s been a real team effort across the board.”

Brendon flagged Rebecca Bush as the most improved player so far this season, which marks Rebecca’s second year of tackle footy. The 30-year-old continues to grow as a player and develop her skills on the field.

Yass fullback Lucy Prosser is currently tying with Goulburn’s Krystal Blackwell for most tries scored this season at eight tries each in the comp followed closely by centre Tijana Zdravevska at six tries.

Jess Grant pushes through Harden’s defence

The coach said the top goal kickers for the team this season are Monique Bul- lock and Jess Grant who usually get the nod for the tee.

“They don’t miss much, I mean we score a lot from the front which probably helps a little bit but even the tougher kicks they tend to make more than they miss.”

Brendon said with how the Magpies have come out this season anything under first would be disappointing.

Previously a centre or second-rower, Brendon said he’s found the switch from playing to coaching challenging at times but finds it quite rewarding.

He hopes to continue the Magpie’s good form they’ve shown right through this season and finish in the top spot giving Yass the best chance to win the premiership, which is of course the main goal.

This weekend the Magpies KFS are up against the Woden Valley Rams on July 2 at 10:30 am at Phillip Oval. Followed by the Goulburn Bulldogs on July 10, Tuggeranong Bushrangers on July 23, UC Stars on August 6 and South Coast United on August 14.
