Sixty Second Swirl
I think we all know by now that Riesling owns its right-royal place in the Yass Valley region. The ripping “rizzas’ from our region that I have tried from the 2021 vintage, have so far led me to believe that this year is a cracking year for the variety.
Shaw Wines is a great proponent of Riesling and the subject of this week’s “swirl” – the Shaw Wines Estate Riesling 2021 – is a delightfully delicious drop.
This Riesling is an illuminating, pale straw colour in the glass. A swirl reveals to me fragrant, floral aromas of citrus blossoms with ripe lemons and an alluring scent of musk. On the palate, it’s a dangerously easy-drinking style with juicy lemon and lime flavours and a lovely balance between acid and fruit sweetness, leading to a delightful, lifted finish.
We enjoyed our bottle with Chinese Crispy Chicken with Lemon Sauce but would go really well with a tray of south coast oysters or grilled flathead fillets with a lemon, caper and butter sauce. I got mine as part of my cellar club dozen, but you can buy for $30 online.
