Sixty Second Swirl by Brent Lello –

I’ve tasted several wines from the Capital Wines stable of cool climate wines in recent months and have become a bit of a fan – they seem to extract every last drop of character and drip of nuance from the grape varieties they work with.

This week’s ‘swirl’ is no exception – the Capital Wines “The Senator” Chardonnay 2019.  I’ve not been impressed with many ‘senators’ lately, but this one is an out-of-the-box exception.

This Chardonnay is a vibrant and bright gold colour in the glass.  A vigorous swirl invites aromas of stone fruit with yellow-fleshed peaches to the fore, ripe nectarines and hints of crushed cashews and toasted almonds.  It’s voluptuous and curvy in the mouth, with a creamy, buttery texture on the palate with soft ripe peach and nut flavours and a delicious little lick of vanilla.  The finish lingers a little longer with a lovely balance of acid, fruit and toasty oak.

We enjoyed our bottle with my version of Chicken ‘Normandy’, bone-in chicken thighs with leeks, crème fraiche, mustard and honey – the match was superb.  This “Chardy’’ would go well with any rich and creamy pasta or chicken dish.  I bought mine from Dan Murphy’s but you can also buy it for $28 online.
