With our winter sports all now over, it’s time to look to the summer of cricket and what better way than to recap last season at the Yass and District Cricket Association.

The 2020/2021 season saw the Dalton Dingoes pull off an almighty upset over the previously undefeated Yass Golf Club in the A-Grade competition to win the premiership on a tricky wicket at Victoria Park.

The Dingoes had won four, lost four and finished in third for the regular season, but were the best team when it mattered most.

They did, however, boast two of the best performing batsmen in the competition, with Nick Pollack leading the league for batting average at 51.00 and Brent Poidevin the league’s top run-scorer with 306 runs. Brent also came second in the league for wickets, with 19 at an average of 11.74. Fellow Dingo Michael Poidevin was the only one to beat him with 21 wickets at an average of 7.29.

Yass Golf Club will be licking their wounds after dropping what many believed to be a near-certain premiership in season 2020/21. Robert Field was the best bat for the Yass Golf Club with 276 runs at an average of 39.43, with a league-wide season-high score of 94 in round 8 against the Bowning Buffaloes. Craig Irwin won the league bowling average with 17 wickets at an average 6.06. They were far and away the best bowling side all season, only conceding a mere 822 runs throughout the regular season.

Boorowa Cricket Club finished in second in the regular season but fell in the Preliminary Final to the eventual premiers.

The Gundaroo Goats rounded out the top four and lost in the first week of finals, also to Dalton. Mark Graham was their best performing batsman with 246 runs at an average of 41.00. David Drew was their best bowler with 11 wickets at an average of 15.27. The Goats scored more runs than any other team throughout the regular season.

Under Captain Angus Bennett-Burleigh, the Bowning Buffaloes finished the year at the bottom of the ladder with one win. However, they showed signs with bat in hand, making more runs throughout the season than the ladder leading Yass Golf Club and the second-most runs for the competition. Andrew Swaffield scored most runs for the Buffaloes with 237 at an average of 29.63, while Mark Dyball had the best batting average with 212 at an average of 30.29. Anthony O’Mara, Andrew Swaffield and

Angus Bennett-Burleigh all finished with eight wickets apiece, with O’Mara leading with an average of 17.25.

In the B Grade Competition, the Harden Hornets defeated the Yass Golf Club to win the premiership. The Hornets’ best bat was Jeffrey Brown, who made 193 runs at an average of 38.60. Brown also led the league for wickets taking 19 at an average of 5.11, while Drew Arabin led for bowling average with 16 wickets at an average of 4.31.

For the Yass Golf Club, Tyler Waters was the league’s best batsman with 244 runs with an average of 61.00. Their best bowler was Matthew Connor, who took ten wickets at an average of 14.30.

The Binalong Bushrangers finished in 3rd, and the Boorowa Gators finished in 4th to round out the top four at season’s end. In 5th was the Bookham Bulls, and 6th was the Harden Bowling Club.
